When one phone gets too many stops

You’ve built the run, sorted the stops, and sent it to a driver’s phone. Then the day changes: a call comes in, a driver calls in sick, or a second van becomes free. Suddenly, one phone has 40 stops and the others have 10. The driver is set up to fail, and you’re juggling calls to rebalance on the fly.

This is the daily reality for many fleet controllers. Reassigning stops manually means guessing the best order, renumbering, and hoping drivers don’t overlap. It costs time, fuel, and patience.

This article shows you how to split a delivery run across multiple phones in StopSorted — using a sorted stop order, not the order stops were typed in. You’ll learn the exact steps, what each driver sees, and how to keep the day running smoothly.

How splitting works (in plain language)

StopSorted treats each approved phone as a separate driver. When a run lives on one phone but has too many stops, you can cut that run into portions. The cut follows the sorted stop order — the best sequence for the road, not the order you entered addresses. The original phone keeps the first part; other phones get new routes for their portions. The map shows you the split visually, so you can balance workload by stop count or geography.

Step-by-step: split a run across phones

Before you start, make sure you have at least two phones approved under Devices. The run must be on Routes — import or build it first if needed.

  1. Open Fleet LoginRoutes.
  2. Expand the phone that currently owns the run.
  3. Tap Split on that route.
  4. If the run is not sorted yet, tap Sort run, then split. StopSorted will sort the whole list first, so the map cut is useful.
  5. Tick one or more additional phones to receive the rest of the stops.
  6. Use the slider to choose where to cut. The map shows this phone’s stops in blue and the other phones in red (and other colours if you split more than two ways).
  7. After the cut, decide how numbers work:
  • Locked (freight already numbered) — numbers stay as they are on every phone.
  • Otherwise choose Keep sorted numbers (recommended) or Re-sort each phone’s part after the cut (each phone gets its own 1…n order).
  1. Tap Commit split.

That’s it. The original phone keeps the first portion on the same route. Each other phone gets a new route for its portion. Phones refresh on the next sync.

Closing the dialog before Commit split changes nothing — except if you already tapped Sort run, then split, that sort is kept on the source run.

What the driver sees vs what the office sees

Once you commit the split, the driver’s phone shows a numbered stop list for their portion, starting from 1 (unless you kept sorted numbers). They can open each stop in Google Maps, Waze, or use in-app turns. The office sees the full picture: a live map with each phone’s stops colour-coded, so you know who’s going where. If a driver calls in sick, you can split again or reassign stops without starting from scratch.

Worked example: rebalancing a heavy day

Mia manages a fleet of three vans. The morning run for Van A had 38 stops, Van B had 12, and Van C had 8. Van A’s driver was already behind by 10am. Mia opened Fleet Login, went to Routes, and expanded Van A’s phone. She tapped Split, ticked Van B and Van C, and used the slider to cut the run roughly in half. The map showed the split clearly. She chose Keep sorted numbers so existing freight labels still matched. After committing, Van A kept 20 stops, Van B took 10, and Van C took 8. The rest of the day ran smoother, with no overlapping addresses and less overtime.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split a run that hasn’t been sorted yet? Yes. Tap Sort run, then split. StopSorted will sort the whole list first, then let you cut it. This ensures the split follows the best stop order, not the order you typed addresses.

What happens to stop numbers after the split? If the run is Locked (freight already numbered), numbers stay the same on every phone. Otherwise, you can choose Keep sorted numbers (recommended) or Re-sort each phone’s part after the cut so each driver gets their own 1…n sequence.

How many phones can I split a run across? You can split across as many approved phones as you have under Devices. The map will show each phone’s stops in a different colour.

Do I need to re-send the run to each phone? No. After you commit the split, each phone will refresh on its next sync and show its new portion.
